Institute for Regional Development unveiled at Tsinghua

Tsinghua unveiled the Institute for Regional Development of Tsinghua University recently, a think tank to serve regional development strategies.

The Institute will strive to develop itself into the most influential think tank on regional issues in China, said Yang Weimin, Head of the China Institute for Development Planning at Tsinghua University and chief of the new institute.

He shared his hopes that the Institute will adopt comprehensive methods in research into regional issues, focus on regional needs and participate in local practice, strengthen international and domestic cooperation, and set up a team consisting of both invited high-end experts and cultivated professionals.

Tsinghua Vice-President Peng Gang, who presided over the ceremony, will serve as Director of the administrative committee. He urged the Institute to summarize China's theories, which can guide practice and share the country’s experience.

The Institute will be operated by the International Innovation Center of Tsinghua University in Shanghai, a joint project of the university and the Shanghai municipal government. It is the only think tank Tsinghua has set up outside its campus.

The International Innovation Center is a product of the cooperation agreement signed between the university and Shanghai on July 29, 2019. One of its purposes is to serve the integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta region, to support the country’s regional development strategies and to take part in global dialogues of regional development.
