Finland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Jyrki Katainen visited Tsinghua and delivered a speech entitled “The Future Challenges of the European Union” on January 17.

Tsinghua President Gu Binglin had a discussion with Deputy Prime Minister Katainen prior to the speech. Tsinghua Vice President Xie Weihe attended the discussion and hosted the speech.

In his speech Mr. Katainen focused on three future challenges: the ageing population, globalization, and climate change. He emphasized the importance of global cooperation in addressing these challenges which effect people throughout the world..

The Tsinghua Global Vision Lectures includes two parts—the Global Leadership series and the Advanced Studies series. The Global Leadership series features such speakers as foreign state and international organization leaders, board chairmen, CEOs of international companies, overseas university presidents, and world-famous scholars. They will address topics mainly in the humanities and social sciences. The Advanced Studies series will invite renowned academic prize winners including Nobel Prize winners, Fields Medal winners, Turing Award winners, and renowned scholars to speak on cross-disciplinary knowledge, frontiers studies, and recent research in related fields.
