Author of Dorothy Hodgkin: A Life Visits Tsinghua

Georgina Ferry, the author of Dorothy Hodgkin: A Life , gave a lecture at Tsinghua on December 2 nd on the topic “Does Science Need Heroes?” focusing on the accomplishments of fellow Nobel laureate and pioneering scientist Hodgkin.

 

Ms. Ferry is an award-winning science writer. Her book Dorothy Hodgkin: A Life is the first biography of the only British female scientist who received the Nobel Prize. Dorothy Hodgkin won the 1964 Nobel Prize in chemistry f or her use of X-ray technology to determine the structures of biochemical substances. In her lecture, Ms. Ferry revealed the inner life of the strong and passionate woman who set out against unimaginable odds at Oxford University in the 1920s. Ms. Ferry concluded her talk with the answer to her own question, “Yes, science need heroes.”

 

In 2004, a British government scholarship named Dorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Awards is provided to China for the first time . Following the lecture, David Concar, the Scientific Officer of the British Embassy to China gave an introduction of scholarship.

 

Students who attended the lecture received complimentary copies of the book.
